HITO Fees
Fees are current and correct as of 1 January 2026.
HITO supports apprentices and trainers through the requirements of the qualification.
HITO supports apprentices and trainers through the requirements of the qualification.
We craft and supply training plans, resources and materials to support learning, regular progress visits, assessments, off-job training and professional development workshops if required, industry assessors, NZQA fees and credit registration.
Apprenticeship Fees
Funded Apprentices
If you are an employee who is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, you are classified as a Funded Apprentice
The fees are $1,715 for each year of your apprenticeship.
Total fees for each funded apprenticeship are:
- Hairdressing: $6,004
- Barbering: $3,430
- Beauty Therapy: $3,430
Non-Funded Apprentices
If you are an employer or employee on a work visa, you are classified as a Non-funded Apprentice
The fees are $5,500 for each year of your apprenticeship.
Total fees for each non-funded apprenticeship are:
- Hairdressing: $19,246
- Barbering: $10,999
- Beauty Therapy: $10,999

HITO invoices are generated annually, starting from a learner’s start or anniversary date of their apprenticeship.
Apprentice fees can be paid in monthly instalments for each year of training. If you pay the full annual fee upfront, you will receive a 5% discount. Contact HITO for more information on paying fees by instalment.

HITO Learners may be eligible for Fees Free
From 1 January 2025, the Government’s Fees Free initiative transitioned from covering the first year of study to supporting the final 2 years of work-based learning.
HITO learners may be eligible for free fees under the Government’s Fees Free scheme.

Qualification by Experience Fees
Funded Qualification by Experience
If you are an employee who is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, you are classified as a Funded Qualification by Experience.
Qualification by Experience funded trainee fees are $1,087.
Qualification by Experience fees must be paid at the time of application.
Non-funded Qualification by Experience
If you are an employer or employee on a work visa, you are classified as a Non-funded Qualification by Experience.
Qualification by Experience non-funded trainee fees are $2,195.
